Rep. Cherfilus-McCormick Issues Statement on the Recent Immigration Policies

December 8, 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C. -  Congresswoman Cherfilus-McCormick released the following statement on the new immigration policies.

"The new immigration policies, restricting green-card holders, banning asylum seekers from 19 countries, cutting worker visas, and ending TPS will have serious economic consequences. We need strategic workforce driven policies, merit-based pathways, and continued TPS provisions.

Without immigrant labor, businesses close, projects stall, and communities suffer. Immigrants have powered America’s economy for generations. They harvest our food, care for our families, build our homes, and support our hospitals, farms, and small businesses. In Florida alone, they are nearly 30% of the workforce and generate more than $170 billion in spending power.

Our industries are already facing worker shortages. Ending TPS for nearly half a million Haitians will worsen those shortages. A blanket ban on 19 developing countries will block students, nurses, entrepreneurs, and scientists who drive innovation and strengthen our economy. These policies risk shutting out the next Einstein or Carnegie and only help our competitors abroad."
