“At midnight, government funding expired. This is deeply disheartening. While shutdowns are not new, each time it happens, it sends the same painful message: too often, leaders in Washington put ego and politics ahead of the people we are meant to serve.

"There is no place in our democracy for rhetoric that incites harm-especially from those elected to serve the public and uphold our Constitution.

"Political violence, in any form and against anyone, is a direct threat to our democratic values.
