June 24, 2024

TAMARAC, FL – Today, Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick joined the City of Lauderdale Lakes Police Department to announce $500,000 in critical Community Project Funding that the city has received for a Stormwater Conveyance and Water Quality Improvement Project.

“South Florida is no stranger to the devastating impacts of extreme weather events and rising sea levels. The recent flooding in South Florida demonstrates the destruction that can happen when our stormwater systems are damaged,” said Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick. With this funding, we are taking steps to protect our community and prevent this level of widespread loss from happening again. I was proud to deliver this investment, which will support improvements to our community’s stormwater infrastructure, water quality, and residents' well-being. This funding is part of my commitment to protect, build, and deliver for Florida’s 20th Congressional District.”

"Our ongoing efforts to secure funding for this vital project have reached a pivotal moment," said Lauderdale Lakes Mayor Veronica Edwards Phillips. "The rehabilitation of our canal network is essential to safeguarding over 15,000 properties from environmental risks and ensuring sustainable water conveyance in Lauderdale Lakes. With this financial support secured, we can now move forward with critical repairs to bolster our community's resilience," she said. "We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick and her team for their unwavering advocacy for Lauderdale Lakes' infrastructure priorities."

This funding will support the rehabilitation of the city’s canal network, which is essential to safeguarding over 15,000 properties from environmental risks and ensuring sustainable water conveyance in Lauderdale Lakes. The canal system in Lauderdale Lakes spans approximately 11 miles and connects with the South Florida Water Management District C-13 Canal. It plays a crucial role in managing water flow and mitigating flood risks. Years of wear and environmental stress have highlighted the urgent need for repairs and restoration efforts.

The funding for the City of Lauderdale Lakes was included in Congresswoman Cherfilus-McCormick’s requests for Community Project Funding (CPF) in Fiscal Year (FY) 2024. The requests delivered over $14.4 million in critical resources for Florida’s 20th Congressional District to address some of the district’s most pressing needs.
