Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-Mccormick Statement On Mass Shootings In Monterey Park & Half Moon Bay
Washington, DC – The past few days should have been the start of celebratory events for the Lunar New Year. Unfortunately, Californians and citizens across the country are grieving the unconscionable loss of 29 innocent lives stolen by gun violence.
The heartbreaking mass shootings in Monterey Park and Half Moon Bay serve as painful reminders of the normalcy with which gun violence has infiltrated our daily lives. But the senseless and unprovoked mass shootings of innocent people are far from normal.
The United States has already experienced 39 mass shootings in the first 24 days of the new year. We should not be forced to repeatedly endure this seemingly never-ending saga. Thoughts and prayers are essential, but they must be coupled with swift legislative action to end the gun violence epidemic sweeping our country.
I stand in solidarity with our AAPI communities. Too many families are suffering from the horrific trauma of gun violence. Congress must pass comprehensive gun reform legislation.
