Fort Lauderdale, FL – Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick today issued the following statement in recognition of Haitian Heritage Month, celebrated during the month of May:

“Haitian Heritage Month is a time to recognize the rich history, culture, and achievements of the global Haitian community. As the first Haitian Democrat elected to Congress, I understand that rich history and culture.

“The Republic of Haiti, the first nation in human history founded by slaves, was born out of a desire for independence and dignity for all. Today, this ethic lives on in the Haitian people and their indomitable spirit. It is this strength and character that we celebrate during the month of May.

“In South Florida, Haitian Americans have made lasting contributions to all aspects of American life, from education to medicine to athletics. They have enriched our community through hard work, determination, and ingenuity.

“This month and every month, let us recognize the numerous contributions of the Haitian people to our community, and celebrate their continued success and prosperity.”
