Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick and Haiti Caucus Co-Chairs Statement on the Recent Jailbreak and State of Emergency in Haiti

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Reps. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, Yvette Clarke, and Ayanna Pressley, Co-Chairs of the Haiti Caucus, issued the following statement on the Recent Jailbreak and State of Emergency in Haiti:
“We are deeply concerned about the deteriorating situation in Haiti, as evidenced by the recent declaration of a state of emergency and the imposition of a curfew in response to violent gang clashes in Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince. The reports of multiple prison breaks and the overall escalation of violence are alarming.
We must make public safety our priority and not allow criminal gangs to continue holding Haiti hostage. Haitians have been repeatedly asking for stability, safety from gang violence, and for their voices to be heard. The Haitian people deserve our attention.
We are also alarmed about the lack of progress towards a transitional consensus government.
The Biden-Harris Administration, along with the international community, must focus on urgently restoring security for the Haitian people and alleviating the ongoing humanitarian crisis.”
