Congresswoman Cherfilus-McCormick’s Statement on the Fifth Anniversary of the Parkland School Shooting
Fort Lauderdale, FL - Five years ago today, 17 students and staff were murdered and 17 more were injured during a horrific shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. The pain and grief inflicted by this mass shooting on the people of Parkland and the entire South Florida community will never go away. Today, we reflect on this tragedy and remember the victims. We must also learn from the brave survivors who have taken their loss, trauma, and grief and turned it into activism. Thanks to their and President Biden’s leadership, we passed the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act. While this is an important first step in the fight against gun violence, more must be done to ensure that Americans can attend school, church, or a concert without fear.
