Congresswoman Cherfilus-McCormick's Statement on the Arrival of the Multinational Security Support Mission and the Future of Haiti

June 27, 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick issued the following statement on the commencement of the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission in Haiti.

"I applaud the Biden-Harris Administration for releasing the critical funds to move the MSS forward in the wake of over eight months of Republican obstructionism. The release of the funds came shortly after a full transitional government was formed to help facilitate elections. These milestones are significant first steps toward restoring order and stability in Haiti.

"With the arrival of the Kenyan-led security mission, the Haitian National Police (HNP) will be better equipped to handle the armed gangs and criminal groups. The mission will help bolster the HNP in its operations, secure state infrastructure, and ensure the free movement of people and goods across the country, particularly in the Haitian capital and its surrounding areas, which have been over 80% controlled by armed gangs.

"This is a win and a sign of relief for the Haitian people who have been terrorized for far too long. But now, the real work begins. It is imperative that we ensure that clear, defined safeguards and accountability measures are in place to protect the rights of the Haitian people. We cannot make the same mistakes of the past.

"Moreover, as we work to help Haiti restore and strengthen its security, we must also prioritize rebuilding its economy. Sustainable economic development is essential for long-term stability for democratic institutions to thrive. Congress must immediately pass trade preferences with Haiti, such as a clean reauthorization of HOPE/HELP. We must continue to support our ally in their efforts for a more peaceful, secure, prosperous, and democratic Haiti."

Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (FL-D-20) is a member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and a Co-Chair of the House Haiti Caucus.
