Congresswoman Cherfilus-McCormick Statement on Moore V. Harper Decision

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, U.S. Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-FL) issued the following statement on the SCOTUS ruling in Moore v. Harper.
“This ruling is a resounding win for our democracy. ‘Independent state legislature theory’ amounts to nothing but a blatant attempt to suppress the will of the people, impede one’s basic right to vote, and lay a path for new congressional maps without any form of accountability. While the ruling is a cause for celebration, there is still much more work that needs to be done to safeguard the democratic process. Congress has a responsibility to pass the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and ensure that every American’s voice is heard.”
In February 2022, Congresswoman Cherfilus-McCormick submitted an amicus brief in opposition to Governor Ron DeSantis’ proposed congressional redistricting plan, on the grounds that it discriminates against Florida’s Black voters and hinders the fair opportunity to elect candidates of choice.
