Congresswoman Cherfilus-McCormick Statement on Firing of Dr. Carla Hayden, Librarian of Congress

May 12, 2025

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-FL) issued the following statement on the Administration’s firing of Dr. Carla Hayden, the Librarian of Congress.

“The decision to abruptly terminate Dr. Carla Hayden is absolutely appalling.

“Dr. Hayden, a Florida native, is a lifelong educator and a dedicated public servant who has propelled the Library of Congress to new heights, modernizing the institution with investments in information technology infrastructure and increasing its digital reach using social media. Through her leadership, she has made the Library of Congress more accessible to the public. She’s also a barrier-breaker, becoming both the first woman and the first African American to hold this post at the People’s Library.

“Despite her long-standing record of success at the Library of Congress, Dr. Hayden was abruptly dismissed. This sudden firing is not just inexcusable — it is part of an ongoing, non-stop assault on the cultural institutions that preserve American history and allow us to learn from our nation’s painful past. If this campaign of erasure continues, generations to come stand to suffer.”
