Congresswoman Cherfilus-McCormick Statement on Continued Deportation Flights to Haiti

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick released the following statement on reporting that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is continuing to conduct deportation flights to Haiti.
“As the first Haitian American Democrat elected to Congress, I am deeply concerned about recent reporting that ICE is continuing deportation flights to Haiti, at a time when the country is plagued by deep chaos and instability.
The recent security alert urging U.S. citizens to depart Haiti as soon as possible underscores just how precarious and life-threatening the situation in Haiti has become. It is dangerous to send Haitians — many of whom have nowhere else to turn — back to the very place they fled.
Given the ongoing humanitarian crisis and growing gang violence, I strongly urge the Biden Administration to put an immediate halt on all deportations to Haiti. The safety and well-being of Haitian migrants is at stake.”
