Congresswoman Cherfilus-McCormick Joins Assistant Leader Clyburn, Reps. Thompson and Brown in Supporting President Biden’s Commitment that the United States Will Never Default on its Debt

February 1, 2023

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congresswoman Cherfilus-McCormick (FL-20) joined Assistant Leader Clyburn (SC-06), and Reps. Thompson (MS-02), and Shontel M. Brown (OH-11) in hosting a press conference to express their support for President Biden’s commitment that the United States will never default on its debt.

"We must honor the promises made to the 66 million Social Security beneficiaries and the 64 million Medicare enrollees that, in both good and bad times, they will have a reliable income and the health care they need," said Congresswoman Cherfilus-McCormick. "Today, I speak for all Americans and the more than 118,000 seniors living in Florida's 20th Congressional District. Seniors and families with disabilities are already facing a myriad of hardships. Cutting Social Security and Medicare will deliver them a blow they cannot recover from. America is a country that safeguards its citizens and pays its debts. I stand firmly with President Biden and my fellow House Democrats in our commitment to protecting Social Security beneficiaries and Medicare enrollees."

“Under no circumstances should we risk the full faith and credit of the United States of America for partisan political games. It is unfortunate and concerning that my colleagues across the aisle are attempting to use the looming debt ceiling as a bargaining chip for their real agenda: cutting Social Security, Medicare, and other essential programs,” said Assistant Democratic Leader James E. Clyburn. “Defaulting on our debt would put undo financial strain on hard-working Americans and trigger a global economic catastrophe. President Biden and Congressional Democrats are committed to paying our debts and protecting our financial credibility on the world stage. Congressional Republicans must demonstrate this commitment as well.”

“I stand in full support of President Biden and his efforts to raise awareness of the importance of what Democrats stand for,” said Rep. Thompson. “President Biden has repeatedly stated that the United States must never fail on its financial obligations. My goal for the constituents of my district and other Americans will always be to lower costs for families, protect Social Security and Medicare, and decrease the deficit. We will keep fighting for the people in our communities.”

"Defaulting on our debt is non-negotiable,” said Rep. Brown. "A vital part of meeting our financial obligations is securing crucial programs such as Social Security and Medicare. These programs provide critical support to everyday Americans, especially those in marginalized and historically disadvantaged communities, and it is shameful and reckless to use these programs as a bargaining chip to obtain major tax cuts for the wealthy. I stand firm with my fellow Democrats in the People's House in supporting President Biden’s commitment that the United States will never default on our debt, while protecting and defending Social Security and Medicare on all fronts.”
