Congresswoman Cherfilus-McCormick Issues Statement on the Death of Former Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo

Washington, DC – Today, Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick released the following statement regarding the death of former Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo:

“On the anniversary of the killing of the Haitian President Jovenel Moïse, I am deeply saddened by the news that Abe Shinzo, former Prime Minister of Japan, was shot and killed while campaigning. This is a tragedy for Japan, the world and for all who knew him. 

“He was a steadfast champion of the friendship between our nations and our people. The longest serving Japanese Prime Minister, his vision of a free and open Asia will endure. Moreover, he cared passionately about the Japanese people and dedicated his life to their service. Up until his last moments on this earth he was engaged in the work of democracy. 

“The United States stands with Japan in this moment of grief. I send my deepest condolences to his family.”
