Congresswoman Cherfilus-McCormick Introduces The People's Prosperity Plan
Washington, DC - While in Congress, I have worked closely with the Biden administration to stimulate the economy of Florida and the 20th Congressional District. Today we found out that the U.S added 390,000 jobs, and the unemployment rate held even at 3.6 percent in May. So, as you can see, economic conditions have steadily improved from a year ago. We now have a record number of people who have started their own businesses, and the State of Florida, cities, and municipalities have received billions of dollars. To continue with this progress in our economy, I have implemented comprehensive reform and introduced H.R. 7929, The People's Prosperity Plan in Congress, and a Gas Prices Relief Act to provide extra economic recovery to Florida's 20th Congressional District.
The People's Prosperity Plan is legislation that proposes that our government continue delivering economic relief, which would allow everyone over 18 who makes less than $75,000 to continue to receive stipends of $1000 a month. We must remember that these economic recovery stipends will help those who need the help the most and will benefit our middle class.
I have also co-sponsored the Affordable Housing and Area Median Income Fairness Act of 2022 to address the lack of affordable housing in the district and across the nation- almost 1 in 4 renters contribute more than 50% of their income to rent every single month. Once the cornerstone of the American dream, cities are quickly becoming out of reach for too many Americans, particularly in areas hardest hit by COVID-19. While there are many factors contributing to this crisis, the HUD statistic known as Area Median Income (AMI), which is used to determine rent prices and income limits for affordable units, is particularly harmful, as the way AMI is currently calculated excludes actual low-income families from the affordable housing intended for them.
Finally, while here in Washington, DC, I have secured funding for the 20th Congressional District by bringing $18 billion in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill and we recently secured $670 million that will be allocated to the State of Florida for Housing assistance. I have also submitted more than 20 million dollars in community funding project requests on behalf of the cities and non-profit organizations. I'm pleased that more than $5 million was requested to provide relief for constituents who cannot pay their rent and those who are first-time homebuyers."
